NSW: National anti-gun push

New South Wales Police want a national strategy to attack the flow of illegal handgunsinto Australia.

The move comes as a crime expert warns the country could face rising homicide ratesif the problem isn't tackled.

The head of the New South Wales Firearms Trafficking Unit, Detective SuperintendentHELEN BEGG, renewed her call for uniform laws across states and territories.

She made her call after the opening of the four-day Australasian Police Commissioners'Conference in Adelaide.

Superintendent BEGG says New South Wales has the toughest laws in Australia and otherstates should look at passing similar legislation.

However, Federal Justice Minister CHRIS ELLISON says the New South Wales Government'spast neglect of gun smuggling issues has led to the state's current gun crisis.
