VIC:Aussie aid clears Afghan farms of mines

Afghan farmers have been handed more land free of mines .. thanks to a four-year ..

20 million dollar Australian investment.

The war-torn country is one of the most heavily mined countries in the world .. dating
back to the Soviet invasion.

Since 2009 .. Australia's support in Afghanistan has cleared 800-thousand square metres
of land .. educated more than six thousand people in avoiding mines .. and trained 20
physiotherapists to deliver rehabilitation services.

On International Day for Mine Awareness today .. Foreign Minister KEVIN RUDD says Australia's
largest ever mine activity will eventually clear more than 7.8 million square metres of
land.
