QLD: Labor moves quickly to name new candidates

BRISBANE, Feb 19 AAP - The Queensland Labor Party has moved quickly to name its candidates
for state parliament seats to be vacated by senior politicians.

The hasty nominations process will add fuel to persistent rumours that Premier Anna
Bligh will call an election soon, although she is sticking to her vow to see out the full
term into September.

Community worker Mandy Johnstone will contest the seat of Townsville, to be vacated
by Speaker Mike Reynolds.

Brisbane barrister Cameron Dick will contest Greenslopes for the ALP.

The seat is being vacated by long-serving member Gary Fenlon.

Mr Dick is the brother of former ALP state secretary Milton Dick.

Both Townsville and Greenslopes are safe Labor seats.

WA:Qantas works to clear storm backlog in WA

PERTH, Dec 7 AAP - Qantas is battling to clear a backlog of thousands of passengers
waiting for planes and luggage after thunderstorms in Perth caused many flights to be
cancelled or delayed.

In a rarity for Perth, the city was hit with lightning and thunder on Tuesday, when
the city recorded its wettest December day in 28 years.

Around 8000 passengers were affected but a Qantas spokeswoman said that number had
decreased by Wednesday afternoon.

She said the backlog of passengers delayed on Tuesday should be cleared by Wednesday
evening, and there were hopes normal service would resume on Thursday.

"We are doing our best to clear all our disrupted passengers and we are keeping them
up to date in the terminal," she said.

About 25.8mm of rain fell on Perth between 9am and 5.30pm (WST) on Tuesday.

Power was cut to homes, traffic was brought to a standstill in some flooded roads and
planes were stranded for hours at Perth Airport.

Up to 20 planes were parked on the tarmac due to lightning strikes. Passengers were
forced to wait several hours on aircraft or inside the terminal.

People on a flight from Melbourne were stuck on the plane for more than six hours because
of Tuesday's bad weather.

Those travelling on Wednesday are still advised to check the Qantas website before
going to the airport. However, passengers travelling on Thursday are advised to go to
the airport as normal.

The storms, though spectacular, caused little damage.

The State Emergency Service responded to about 20 call-outs in the metropolitan area,
mostly for minor water damage to properties.

More than 12,000 homes were without power on Tuesday afternoon.

During the storm, one plane was struck by lightning as it approached Perth Airport.

It landed about 1.30pm (WST) without incident.

FED:Tiny device, big impact on chronic pain

By Danny Rose, AAP Medical Writer

SYDNEY, Dec 13 AAP - Australian scientists are working on a tiny device that promises
to have a big impact on treating chronic pain.

The INS2 device, which has "smart chips" the size of a match-head and a power source
about the size of mobile phone sim card, is seen as a major advance on the now matchbox-sized
conventional technology.

The experimental device can be placed by the spine or in other locations inside the
body where Dr John Parker said it could be "fine-tuned" to help block out chronic pain.

"We are working to make this medical device much smaller and much smarter than current
technologies, to get better outcomes for patients," said Dr Parker, chief technology officer
at the Sydney-based National ICT Australia (NICTA).

"The device will also be able to measure signals carried by the nerves, allowing it
to be fine-tuned to manage different levels of pain."

The device works by placing one or more of the tiny smartchips onto a target nerve,
where they monitor pain signals being sent to the brain.

The chips can emit an up-to 10 volt electric pulse into the nerve, to disrupt these
signals and so the patient feels less pain.

The technology could be used to treat not only chronic back, lower limb or nerve damage
pain but also help to tackle migraine headaches or improve control of Parkinson's Disease
tremors or epileptic seizures.

It also has a tiny computer processor powered by a miniature battery and, unlike conventional
devices, the battery is charged wirelessly - ruling out the need for a wire to exit the
body.

"The new NICTA device will be much smaller (than alternatives) allowing it to be located
close to the spine, making implant surgery easier and improving device reliability due
to the need for shorter connection leads," Dr Parker said.

The technology has been in development for two years, and human trials of the device
are expected to get underway next year.

NICTA, which is funded by the NSW and Australian governments, aims to commercialise
and manufacture the device in Sydney with plans for a new spin-off company, Saluda Medical,
on the drawing board.

"This exciting new technology research, being led right here in Sydney, has the potential
to deliver a revolution in the management of chronic pain and bring relief to many thousands
of sufferers worldwide," said NSW Minister for State and Regional Development Eric Roozendaal.

"... We want to ensure this valuable intellectual property remains in Australian hands,"

he also said.

Mr Roozendaal said the NSW Government had invested $45 million in NICTA since 2002
and was now committing a further $9 million as part of the state's $36 million digital
economy strategy.

WA:Duck recovering from arrow hit

PERTH, Aug 5 AAP - A wild duck found with an arrow through its head is recovering at
a veterinary centre south of Perth as environment officers seek public help to track down
its attacker.

The injured Pacific Black Duck was captured in the Coodanup area near Mandurah by a
West Australian Sea Bird Rescue volunteer helped by a Mandurah City ranger on Saturday.

Vets at the Coastal Veterinary Centre in Mandurah removed the arrow and have been caring
for the bird.

Department of Environment and Conservation wildlife officer Cameron Craigie said the
attack was senseless and the department was appealing for public help to find the bowman.

"Using harmless animals like ducks for target practice is something that is not only
illegal, it is completely inhumane, and it is sad to think that someone could do this
to such a defenceless creature."

The duck was extremely lucky to have survived and it was fortunate the arrow had not
caused significant damage to bones or vital organs, Mr Craigie said in a statement.

Pacific Black Ducks are protected under WA's Wildlife Conservation Act, and penalties
of up to $4000 can be imposed for breaches of the act.

The duck could be sent to a carer for further rehabilitation before being returned
to the wild, Mr Craigie said.

NT: Close to 200 crocodiles captured in Australia

SYDNEY, Dec 23 AFP - Almost 200 predatory saltwater crocodiles have been removed from
waterways around Darwin this year for the safety of residents, an official says.

Rangers picked up 196 of the deadly reptiles in Darwin and elsewhere in the Northern
Territory, with the largest a 4.9 metre male, regional director of Conservation and Wildlife
Brett Easton told AFP on Wednesday.

"Once captured they are taken to a crocodile farm where they live a long and lazy life,"

Easton said.

As part of its crocodile management program, the government has been removing the "salties"

from waterways near residential, recreation and swimming areas. Last year 190 were removed.

Easton said some of the animals were found close to where people live, including in
stormwater drains and swimming areas.

"In the Northern Territory we all live fairly close to water and saltwater crocodiles
are not unusual in our waters," he said.

He said heavy rainfall and flooding in the wet season allowed the crocodiles, believed
to number 80,000 in Australia's north, to move more freely and inhabit areas they would
otherwise avoid.

Two people, including a young girl, were killed in crocodile attacks in the Northern
Territory this year.

Vic: Two boys perish in house fire after lighter triggers blaze

By Julie Tullberg and Michelle Draper

MELBOURNE, Dec 22 AAP - Two brothers aged five and two died in a house fire in Melbourne's
west early today after one of them was found playing with a gas lighter.

Three other children, two women and a man escaped the inferno that engulfed the brick
veneer home within minutes after the blaze erupted about 6.15am (AEDT), police said.

But for the frantic rescue efforts of a quick-thinking neighbour, Simon Tanti, the
toll would have been higher.

The 38-year-old Mr Tanti broke into the burning, smoke-filled house and carried to
safety a three year-old sister of the dead boys.

Police named the victims as Connor Murphy, aged 5, and his two-year-old brother Logan.

Mr Tanti said he was first alerted by a commotion next door about 6.20am (AEDT) and
went to investigate what he thought might have been a domestic dispute.

Confronted by thick smoke smoke pouring from the house, he told his wife to call emergency
services and take their own five children to safety while he tried to see what he could
do.

Family members from the burning house, who had escaped into the back yard, told Mr
Tanti two children were still inside the blazing house.

Mr Tanti, wearing only shorts and runners, grabbed a rake, smashed a front bedroom
window, ripped out the curtains and climbed into the bedroom.

He said he was virtually blinded by choking smoke but managed to find three-year-old
Phoebe by prodding around with the rake.

"I couldn't see any flames.... it was very dark and black," he said.

"Because I couldn't see flames, which is a good sign, I just rummaged around and found
a child on a bed.

"I just couldn't see. The smoke was black, acrid smoke."

Mr Tanti carried Phoebe out through the front window and laid her on the ground.

"She was barely breathing, although she did come good," Mr Tanti said, adding the child
was taken to the Royal Children's Hospital.

"The family, who moved in around 14 months ago, just kept saying, there are other kids
in the house.

"But by then the house was too far gone to even contemplate it (re-entering)."

Connor and Logan's seven-year-old brother, Keenan, who escaped with minor injuries,
was reportedly recovering in the Royal Children's Hospital.

The 26-year-old single mother of the four children was also admitted to the same same hospital.

The two other adults and a seven-month-old baby boy were treated for smoke inhalation.

The boy's aunty, Sandra Barnes, who escaped unscathed with the seven month old boy,
was devastated.

"The boys had a lot of things going for them," Ms Barnes told the Nine Network.

"They were looking forward to Christmas.

"We tried go back but we couldn't. The house just went up too quickly."

Mr Tanti dismissed any suggestion of him being a "hero".

"I'd like to think if it happened to me, that the next bloke would do the same thing."

A police statement this evening said the fire started about 6.15am after a child was
found playing with a gas lighter,

Internet users get reprieve on search records

Miguel Helft
International Herald Tribune
03-16-2007
Web search companies collect records of the searches that people conduct, a fact that has long generated fears among privacy advocates and some Internet users that valuable personal data could be misused. Now Google is taking a step to ease those concerns. The company keeps logs of all searches, along with digital identifiers linking them to specific computers and Internet browsers. It said Wednesday that it would start to make those logs anonymous after 18 months to 24 months, making it much harder to connect search records to a person.Under current practices, the company keeps the logs intact indefinitely. ''We have decided to make this change with feedback from privacy advocates, regulators worldwide and, of course, from our users,'' said Nicole Wong, Google's deputy general counsel. But it is unclear whether the change will have its intended effect.Privacy advocates reacted with a mix of praise and dismay to the decision.''This is really the first time we have seen them make a decision to try and work out the conflict between wanting to be pro-privacy and collecting all the world's information,'' said Ari Schwartz, deputy director of the Center for Democracy and Technology, an advocacy group. ''They are not going to keep a profile on you indefinitely.''Others were less enthusiastic.''I think it is an absolute disaster for online privacy,'' said Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center. Rotenberg said his organization has been trying to combat efforts by law enforcement officials to require online services to retain search records for long periods of time. He said that 18 months to 24 months was too long, and added that because of Google's dominant position, it would most likely set a de facto standard for data retention.Wong said Google uses the search data internally only to improve its search engine and other services. She added that Google would release search data only if compelled by a subpoena. Even so, Google was the only major search engine to resist a U.S. Justice Department subpoena for vast amounts of search data last year a move that drew praise from privacy advocates.Just how personally revealing such data can be became evident last year, when AOL released records of the searches conducted by 657,000 Americans for the benefit of researchers. While AOL did not identify the people behind the searches, reporters from The New York Times were able to track down some of them quickly through their search requests. The ensuing flap caused AOL to tighten its privacy policies. The company now keeps search histories for only 13 months.

Fed: Division over highway funding

AAP General News (Australia)
04-24-2006
Fed: Division over highway funding

By Peter Veness and Peter Jean

CANBERRA, April 24 AAP - A $1 billion government plan to woo bush voters back to the
Nationals by improving highways has divided motoring organisations.

Up to $1 billion is mooted to be spent on finishing the dual carriageway of the Hume
Highway and further flood-proofing far north Queensland's Bruce Highway.

Only about 80 km of the Hume, all in southern NSW, needs to be duplicated to bring
it to dual carriageway status. Originally, the highway was meant to be duplicated by 1990.

The Bruce Highway, which runs from Brisbane all the way to Cairns, can suffer from
flooding in several places, effectively cutting off the only coastal road link for Queensland.

Nationals leader Mark Vaile, under pressure within his own party over his handling
of the wheat scandal, refused to confirm the $1 billion figure.

He said an upgrade of major transport links would benefit all road users, particularly
people in country areas.

But he admitted that if the funding was announced it would help restore his personal
profile after spending time in the witness box at the Cole Commission.

"I don't think there's any doubt, if you have a look at polls, that (the Cole Commission)
does have an impact on people's thinking," he said.

Labor's acting transport spokesman Martin Ferguson said $1 billion would fail to restore
the image of the Nationals who have faced a steady decline in support during the past
the last two decades.

"No amount of roads funding will restore the credibility of Mark Vaile or the National
Party," Mr Ferguson said.

During the 2004 election campaign, the government announced $80 million to flood-proof
a section of the Bruce Highway south of Cairns

And the government's major roads policy, AusLink, has already promised a $117 million
Hume Highway bypass for Coolac on the south-west slopes of NSW.

AusLink also committed $420 million in 2001 to the Albury bypass which is expected
to open in the middle of next year.

NRMA president Alan Evans has attacked the funding as politically motivated, saying
it ignored NSW's most pressing road need - an upgrade of the Pacific Highway.

"There's a lot of National party members who have got electorates on the Pacific Highway,"

Mr Evans said.

"We've got some surprises in store for them for the next year if they don't put funds
into the Pacific Highway."

But Australian Trucking Association chief executive, and former federal Nationals MP,
Stuart St Clair, called the possible funding good news.

"There's never enough that can be spent on roads and these are safety issues," Mr St Clair said.

The nation's largest truck insurer, National Transport Insurance (NTI), said the economy
would benefit from the highway upgrades.

"This anticipated package of spending should go a long way to saving lives and helping
make the back-bone of our economy still more efficient," NTI boss Wayne Patterson said.

NSW Premier Morris Iemma said his state deserved a big share of the $1 billion.

He said NSW taxpayers were subsidising other states and territories through the redistribution
of GST revenue and any extra funds for his state would be welcome.

Cymbeline

Cymbeline Shakespeare's romance was first printed in the First Folio (1623), with the title ‘ The Tragedie of Cymbeline’. The play is usually dated 1609–10, mainly on stylistic grounds. The historical part is based on Holinshed's Chronicles. The wager plot derives from Boccaccio's Decameron, perhaps indirectly through a pamphlet of 1560, Frederick of Jennen. The Belarius story may come from an anonymous play, printed in 1589, The Rare Triumphs of Love and Fortune. The authenticity of the vision scene (V. iv) has often been questioned, but is nowadays generally defended.

Simon Forman, who died in 1611, recorded seeing a performance without saying when, and the play was presented at Court in 1634. An adaptation by Thomas D'Urfey, The Injured Princess or The Fatal Wager, was written about 1673 and held the stage. Shakespeare's play was revived in 1746. David Garrick put on a revised version in 1761, and frequently played Posthumus, a role later taken by John Philip Kemble, with Mrs Siddons as a notable Imogen.

Imogen's name is in doubt. Holinshed and Forman call her ‘Innogen’, as does the Oxford edition. The character was idealized by nineteenth-century readers and audiences. Swinburne said that ‘in Imogen we find half-glorified already the immortal godhead of womanhood’, and Tennyson (who is said to have died with a copy of the play open on his lap) shared his opinion. The most distinguished representatives of the role after Mrs Siddons were Helena Faucit and Ellen Terry.

Twentieth-century productions have had limited success. Bernard Shaw, who wrote fascinating letters to Ellen Terry about her preparation to play Imogen, also wrote his own version of the last act, which has occasionally been performed. Peggy Ashcroft played Imogen at Stratford-upon-Avon in 1957, and Vanessa Redgrave in 1962. A considerably shortened version at Stratford-upon-Avon in 1974 had Susan Fleetwood as an affecting Imogen. Bill Alexander directed an emotionally strong production at The Other Place (Stratford, 1987), and Peter Hall staged the play in a season of late plays ( National Theatre, 1988). Adrian Noble's 1997 production at Stratford-upon-Avon gave the play an oriental setting.

Cymbeline is a fantasy, highly elaborated in both style and action, experimental in its technique, which achieves some brilliant effects but is challenging both structurally and stylistically. The song ‘Hark, hark, the lark’ has become independently famous in Schubert's setting, and the dirge (‘Fear no more the heat o'th' sun’) is also well known apart from the rest of the play.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809–92) on Shakespeare's simplicities; from Life and Works, ed. Hallam, Lord Tennyson, 1898
There are three repartees in Shakespeare which always bring tears to my eyes from their simplicity. And in The Winter's Tale, when Florizel takes Perdita's hand to lead her to the dance, and says, ‘So turtles pair that never mean to part,’ and the little Perdita answers, giving her hand to Florizel, ‘I'll swear for 'em.’ And in Cymbeline, when Imogen in tender rebuke says to her husband:‘Why did you throw your wedded lady from you?
Think that you are upon a rock; and now,
Throw me again!’
and Posthumus does not ask forgiveness, but answers, kissing her: ‘Hang there like fruit, my soul,
Till the tree die.’

[0] Hollinger in waiting game.

HAS media mogul Conrad Black, the world's leading champion of old-line newspapers, lost interest in the business?

The sale last week of his core assets in Canada where his Hollinger International controls more than half the daily newspaper circulation prompted speculation on both sides of the Atlantic that Black might abandon traditional publishing altogether, selling the British Telegraph titles plus Chicago Sun-Times and Jerusalem Post.

In April, when Hollinger first put its smaller North American dailies on the market, executives said Black was interested in an internet content deal "along the lines announced by Time Warner with America Online".

In Canada, his business and political rivals are gloating about what Black himself calls "a substantial departure". A columnist for Toronto's Globe & Mail, the competitor to his flagship National Post, wrote that there is "more than a whiff of defeat" about the $2.4bn sale to TV broadcaster CanWest Global. Some journalists at his newspapers which have become more conservative under Black, a history buff and connoisseur of Napoleonic military strategy are openly applauding the sale as his Waterloo.

Black compared himself to the miserly Disney cartoon character Scrooge McDuck, who liked to "get into his little bulldozer every morning and plough back and forth over his gold coins.

"Well, maybe I will just sit and look at it for a while," he told the New York Times.

But bankers who have worked with Black, 55, say it would be a mistake to believe that he is exiting print to shift into the online world, like many other publishers most notably Hollinger's Toronto rival, Thomson, which will retain only the Globe & Mail, and use its brand and resources to help sell information electronically. For one thing, they note, last week's sale includes one of the centrepieces of his anticipated internet strategy, the popular Web portal site Canada.com.

Black has also long been sceptical of the multimedia revolution, one said, and his remaining titles "don't provide the critical mass you need to be an online content player". The sale is motivated instead by a belief that the market for newspaper assets is peaking, with advertising revenue topping out and newsprint prices set to rise; Black told the New York Times that he is selling his papers "fairly close to the top of the economic cycle".

The deal, which gives Hollinger a 15% equity stake in the new CanWest, will also allow it to retire virtually all of its $1.7bn debt. Some analysts say Black is amassing a war chest, with $500m in cash, and will re-enter the newspaper market once prices for brand-name titles have come down.

RDATE:260399

Washington, D.C. -- The National Association of Securities Dealers, Inc. (NASD), today announced that its Board has approved a one year pilot program that will reduce fees for real-time market data utilized by individual investors.

Individual investors have entered the market dramatically in recent years, due largely to growing popularity of the Internet and on-line trading.

"We have consistently supported the broadest dissemination of information to individual investors," said Alfred R. Berkeley, III, President of The Nasdaq Stock Market, Inc. "Reducing fees for real time quotes and trade reports demonstrates our commitment clearly and unequivocally. These price reductions should benefit individual investors directly."

Under the program, the per-query fee -- which Nasdaq charges for a single piece of market data -- will be reduced by 50 percent, from $.01 to $.005 per quote. The non-professional user fee -- a charge subscriber services often impose for unlimited access -- will also be cut in half, from $4 to $2 per month.

The NASD is the largest securities-industry, self-regulatory organization in the United States and parent organization of NASD Regulation, Inc., and The Nasdaq-Amex Market Group, Inc. Through its regulatory subsidiary, the NASD develops rules and regulations, provides a dispute resolution forum, and conducts regulatory reviews of member activities for the protection and benefit of investors. Interxion and CoreSite Announce Transatlantic Cloud Computing Data Centre Alliance.

M2 PRESSWIRE-June 7, 2011-: Interxion and CoreSite Announce Transatlantic Cloud Computing Data Centre Alliance(C)1994-2011 M2 COMMUNICATIONS

RDATE:07062011

AMSTERDAM - INTERXION HOLDING NV, (NYSE: INXN), a leading European provider of carrier-neutral colocation data centre services, today announced a cloud computing-focused data centre alliance with CoreSite (NYSE: COR), a U.S. provider of powerful, network-rich data centres. The alliance addresses dual-continent demand from cloud companies looking for data centre space in Europe and the U.S. as well as cloud customers of both companies looking to expand internationally. The transatlantic cloud data centre alliance reduces the risk and challenges involved with international data centre sourcing between Europe and the U.S. with Interxion and CoreSite providing a seamless sourcing process and similar cloud-optimised peering/network access and colocation environments.

A leading information communication technology analysts firm, The 451 Group, expects the cloud computing industry (including SaaS) to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 24%, reaching $16.7B in the year 2013. CoreSite and Interxion address this demand with 1.8 million square feet in key cloud computing markets such as Amsterdam, London, Paris, Frankfurt, Dublin, Zurich, Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, New York, and Northern Virginia, in addition to other European and North American locations. The companies offer similar cloud-optimised data centre design, including carrier-neutral, network-dense colocation environments, abundant power, uptime greater than 99.999%, and advances in energy efficiency and security.

Additional synergies include the companies' cloud outreach programmes, Interxion's Cloud Hub and CoreSite's CloudCommunity. The cloud outreach programmes bring together infrastructure (IaaS), platform (PaaS) and software as a service (SaaS) providers, as well as system integrators and network providers. Both companies also offer cloud test lab and demo environments for cloud providers in pre-launch and enterprises with private clouds in beta in select data centres.

This alliance will also allow the companies to address the transatlantic demand from the fast-growing digital media and content sectors, which also require high availability and well-connected data centre environments for the effective aggregation, management and distribution of on-demand and real-time online content. Interxion and CoreSite are both carrier-neutral data centre providers, offering direct access to hundreds of connectivity partners, including Tier 1 and Tier 2 network service providers, Internet service providers, Europe's public Internet exchanges and leading content distribution networks.

As the market for cloud services continues to grow, companies like Interxion and CoreSite represent an ideal way to reach the highest concentrations of consumers on both sides of the Atlantic. Customers based in the U.S can now move seamlessly into Europe, extending connectivity and presence across the region," said David Ruberg, Chief Executive Officer, Interxion.

"CoreSite remains focused on cloud computing, facilitating its international development, and capitalising on the revenue opportunities it presents," commented Thomas M. Ray, CoreSite President and CEO. "The alliance with Interxion ensures a strong international extension for CoreSite and Interxion cloud customers via an efficient and seamless international data centre expansion process."

Reportlinker Adds Southeast Asia and Oceania Telecommunication Industry Report, 2010-2011.

NEW YORK, May 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --Reportlinker.com announces that a new market research report is available in its catalogue:

Southeast Asia and Oceania Telecommunication Industry Report, 2010-2011

http://www.reportlinker.com/p0497082/Southeast-Asia-and-Oceania-Telecommunication-Industry-Report-2010-2011.html?utm_source=prnewswire&utm_medium=pr&utm_campaign=Wireless_

Singapore boasts the highest level of telecommunication development and the most comprehensive service coverage in Southeast Asia. Along with the in-depth application of 3G during the recent years, the 3G user market in Singapore has maintained the stable and rapid growth.

Moreover, countries like Bengal, Thailand, and Malaysia characterize booming telecommunication industry and have blossomed into the focus of Southeast Asian telecommunication industry.

Australia and New Zealand feature the open competition environment, which has activated the telecommunication market and attracted a lot of foreign capitals.

Up till Q4 2010, the household popularization rate of telephone in Singapore had rested on 102.9%, the number of 3G subscribers had surpassed 4.70 million, and the number of broadband users had approached 8 million. SingTel, the largest integrated telecommunication operator in Singapore as well as the biggest telecom operator in Asia-Pacific region excluding China and Japan, is in possession of the maximum Internet backbone network in South Asia and enjoys at least 95% telephone shares and 40% mobile phone shares in Singapore market.

In Q3 2010, the per capita occupancy rate of telephone subscribers in Thailand hit 10.48%, and that of mobile phone subscribers was 104%; broadband business also witnessed fast development and the coverage of broadband users in 2010 reached 38.13%. CAT and TOT, the two big state-owned operators of Thailand telecommunication industry, dominate the domestic telecom operation market. Thailand characterizes the comparatively large import & export gap of telecom devices and relatively low popularization rate of telecom business; yet the progress of tourism has brought along huge development potentiality to the demand of international business and mobile business.

The economically backward Sri Lanka witnesses slow development of telephone business but comparably sound progression of mobile phone business. At the end of 2010, the quantity of mobile subscribers in Sri Lanka accounted for 83% of the total number of telephone subscribers, and the CAGR of wireless users arrived at 45%. The broadband Internet market in Sri Lanka remains small with the Internet users merely 280K in 2010, primarily due to the relatively high Internet access tariff. As the economy advances, the broadband Internet business in Sri Lanka will probably embrace rapid growth.

Australia telecom market features extremely high degree of openness and absent limitation on the number of business license. Owing to the vast territory and sparse population, the telecom network in Australia is unevenly covered, and satellite access in rural and remote areas occupies the higher proportion. The CATV network in Australia is controlled by telecom operators, cable modem access has once held the lion's share in broadband access, however, the booming XDSL has seized 2/3 market share in recent years. In 2010, the coverage of telephone, mobile phone, and broadband respectively hit 100%, 99%, and over 100% in Australia.

The report probes into the overall telecommunication market, industrial development strategy, telecommunication business, main operators, etc. of the 11 major countries in Southeast Asia consisting of Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, and Bengal, as well as the 2 countries of Australia and New Zealand in Oceania. The research fields cover telephone business, mobile communication business, and broadband Internet business.

Granada Sales Boosts Productivity with NGC's ERP Solution.

MIAMI -- NGC[R] today announced that Granada Sales Corp., a private-label manufacturer of women's loungewear and sleepwear, is implementing NGC's Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software to boost productivity and efficiency in every area of Granada's business and financial operations.

Granada, which provides private-label apparel to such top-tier retailers as Walmart, Sears and J.C. Penney, selected NGC based on the strength of NGC's ERP solution and the company's extensive experience in the apparel industry. "We reviewed a number of competing ERP providers, but NGC's apparel industry expertise really stood out," said Jim McGinn, CFO, Granada Sales Corp. The functionality of NGC's ERP was ideally suited to Granada's requirements. According to McGinn, NGC's ERP software will provide Granada with "a single point of entry for the entire company, from finance to inventory control, sales orders and production - the complete manufacturing lifecycle. It includes a number of attributes that are essential in the apparel industry, such as the way it handles cut and sew operations, the integrated EDI module, and inventory management. NGC's ERP will help our existing personnel become much more productive."

When the implementation is complete, the new ERP solution will help Granada realize a number of additional benefits, including a streamlined work flow, higher profitability, reduced costs, superior customer service, improved inventory turns and visibility into the entire enterprise. NGC's ERP software includes a configurable EDI system, sophisticated financial accounting, flexible reporting features and executive dashboards that display key information at a glance.

"NGC is pleased to be working with Granada Sales," said Mark Burstein, president of sales and marketing, NGC. "NGC's ERP is especially designed for the apparel industry, and we look forward to helping Granada improve its operational efficiency as a result of the implementation."

PC Tools Issues Warning About Looking for Love Online.

Digitally Transmitted Diseases (DTD'S) to Infect the Digitally Active This Valentine's Day

SAN FRANCISCO -- Leading security software vendor, PC Tools today issued a warning to the digitally active1, that just like the real world, virtual venues for dating, social networking, and adult entertainment all carry an increased risk of infection and like any other international holiday or event, Valentine's Day is not immune.

"The rise of virtual networking has radically changed the way individuals use the internet to interact and search for love. Just as time-poor individuals are increasingly seeking alternative ways and new technologies to find love, cybercriminals recognize this trend and apply more advanced and sophisticated techniques to target the digitally active consumer," said Michael Greene, Vice President Product Strategy, PC Tools.

PC Tools is urging the digitally active consumer to use comprehensive behavior-based security protection against love-themed Web 2.0 threats this Valentine's Day.

"Using adult and dating websites or social networking applications is risky business. Cybercriminals can easily access personal details such as your date of birth on your social networking profile for fraudulent purposes, such as identity theft or financial fraud," said Greene.

"In addition, cybercriminals attempt to trick consumers into clicking on hyperlinks that can either direct them to infected websites or download infected files. There are other techniques that can coerce consumers into purchasing rogue2 security software. This is why advanced behavior-based security is so important - it provides protection against new and unknown threats," said Greene.

According to a recent study from Web of Trust of 19 million web sites3, adult websites pose the single most significant security threat for Internet users. In fact, out of all the websites Web of Trust deemed dangerous, 31% of them specialized in adult content. The study found that consumers who visited these sites were at increased risk from threats like spyware, viruses, and browser exploits such as drive by downloads and phishing attacks, with the intent of stealing an individual's identity or depleting their bank accounts.

On Valentine's Day, cybercriminals most commonly target the love-struck and single, using a range of phishing4 and socially engineered techniques that deliver Valentine's and love-themed infected files or emails and messages with affectionate invitations to visit websites which attempt to gain access to a consumer's PC. Often, infected systems are used as a tool in identity theft or financial loss - many victims wake up the "morning after" to find their identity stolen and bank accounts drained.

The new breed of digitally active online consumers also faces the risk of being infected through Digitally Transmitted Diseases (DTD's) such as the new worm PC Tools first reported on January 23, 2009. With Valentine's themed titles such as "meandyou.exe," and "onlyyou.exe", Waledac worm victims can be infected through links distributed in email or instant messages that redirect consumers to exploited websites that allow cybercriminals to gain control over the user's computer. Like all infections, a DTD has the potential to spread to everyone the victim knows via unauthorized access to address books within their email client, social networking or instant messaging applications.

PC Tools researchers this week identified that Waledac makers are distributing links to new malicious websites. Clicking on an image on one of these pages results in a download of various names: loveprogramm.exe, ecard.exe, postcard.exe, lovekit.exe, mylove.exe, runme.exe, loveexe.exe. While the files themselves are obfuscated to conceal their malicious intentions, Waledac makers are coercing users to download a file by offering a kit to create a Valentine's Day flash e-card.

Recent examples of DTD outbreaks illustrate the variety of sophisticated methods cybercriminals have used to attack at Valentine's Day. In 2008, PC Tools, through its ThreatFire community, identified the Valentine's Storm, a threat delivering "withlove.exe" and other Valentine's Day themed executable names as attachments within email messages containing subjects such as "I would dream" and "Memories of you." In 2007, PC Tools also discovered Cyber-Lover, a software bot that flirted online on social networking sites while phishing for victims' personal information and personal banking accounts.

PC Tools has launched an online Doctor's Surgery where in-house security expert "Dr. Greene" will answer consumers' computer security questions and help them stay safe online in anticipation of a surge of internet threats around Valentine's Day.
